Anesthesiologists in the dentistry “Julia” use laughing gas (hyponitrous oxide) in order to make treatment as comfort and painless as possible. Hyponitrous oxide is an oxide of the most widespread rare gas on the Earth called azote. This substance has a slightly subtle sweetish smell. Though it`s not used in its pure form in the dentistry for children and adults. As a rule, the combination of hyponitrous oxide and oxygen is used for anaesthesis and sedation. It has been regularly used in stomatology since 1948 and nowadays laughing gas is used in 85% of treatment cases in dentistries of the USA and European Union countries.
Treatment of children's teeth under sedation is easy and fast: the dentist offers kid the mask with the help of which he or she can inhale laughing gas. There are different flavored masks (lemon, strawberry, orange and others) used in pediatric dentistry as well as masks of various colors with the images of animals and toys, which make the sedation process enjoyable. Thus the child will remember a visit to the dentist as a positive and joyful event. After the procedure, the gas is completely eliminated from the body during few minutes after exhalation. There are no consequences and addiction.
Parents' feedbacks indicate that the sedation with the help of laughing gas is very helpful for a child with a moderate fear and allows to form a stereotype of a fearless treatment.
But still there are some contraindications for the use of nitrous oxide. They are:
- the kid is too young and he or she is not ready for cooperation (up to three years).
- some mental illnesses and intellectual disabilities that impede the ability to negotiate with the child.
- impaired nasal breathing (ARVI, running nose), when the child will breathe only through the mouth and won`t be able to use the nasal mask.
- stuffed stomach since nausea and vomiting may occur that`s why the last meal must be eaten at least 2 hours before the beginning of dental treatment under sedation.
